How to Delete a Page in Word (Blank or Full)

To delete a page in Word, click anywhere on it, press Ctrl + G, type \page, press Enter, then close the box and press Delete. That selects the whole page and removes it. If the page is blank and won’t go away, the cause is almost always an invisible paragraph mark or a page break — turn on ¶ (Show/Hide), select those marks, and delete them.

Which method do you need?

What you’re looking atGo to
A page with text you want goneMethod 1 — Go To
A blank page in the middleMethod 2 — paragraph marks
A page that starts after a jumpMethod 3 — page break
A blank page you can’t selectMethod 4 — section break
An extra page at the very endMethod 5 — trailing marks

Why blank pages refuse to delete

A “blank” page isn’t actually empty — it holds invisible characters:

Hidden characterWhat it looks like with ¶ on
Extra paragraph marksA row of symbols
A page breakA line reading “Page Break”
A section breakA double dotted line
An oversized empty paragraphA with a huge font size

Delete the invisible character and the page disappears. Here’s each case in detail.

Method 1: Delete a page that has content

The fastest, most reliable route:

  1. Click anywhere on the page you want to remove.
  2. Press Ctrl + G (Mac: Cmd + Option + G) to open the Go To tab.
  3. Type \page and press Enter. Word selects the page’s content.
  4. Click Close.
  5. Press Delete.

The page and its text are gone. To delete only part of it, click at the very start of the page, then Shift + click at the end, and press Delete.

Method 2: Delete a blank page

Blank pages are nearly always extra paragraph marks. Fix them directly:

  1. Go to Home → ¶ (Show/Hide formatting marks). Every hidden mark becomes visible.
  2. Scroll to the blank page.
  3. Select the marks sitting on it.
  4. Press Delete.
  5. Do the same for any line reading Page Break — select it and delete.

If a sits at the very end of the document and refuses to delete, that’s Word protecting the final paragraph mark. Select it, set the font size to 1, and the page collapses.

Method 3: Delete a page break

  1. Turn on so the break is visible.
  2. Click just before the Page Break line — or click at the top of the following page.
  3. Press Delete (or Backspace).
  4. Turn off again.

A manual page break (Ctrl + Enter) forces a new page. Removing the break pulls the content back up.

Method 4: Delete a section break

Section breaks store layout information (columns, orientation, headers), so deleting one changes formatting:

  1. Show marks.
  2. Select the section break line (the double dotted line).
  3. Press Delete.
  4. Word now applies the following section’s formatting to the text above it. If the layout shifts, press Ctrl + Z to undo and delete the page’s content instead.

Method 5: Delete the last page in a document

  1. Press Ctrl + End to jump to the very end.
  2. Hold Backspace to clear the trailing empty paragraphs.
  3. If the page survives, select the final and set its font size to 1.

The method is identical; the shortcuts differ:

What not to do

Once the document is clean, you’ll often want to share it as a fixed layout — how to convert Word to PDF covers that, and if you need to change a PDF’s text afterwards, see how to edit a PDF in Word.
