How to Make a Book Cover (Free, Print-Ready)
To make a book cover, work out your trim size and page count first, set up a canvas with the correct spine width and bleed, then design front, spine, and back as one wrap. Canva and other tools handle the layout — but getting the dimensions wrong is the mistake that gets a cover rejected by printers.
Get the numbers right before you design
A book cover isn’t a poster. It’s a wrap covering the back, spine, and front. Three measurements decide everything:
| Measurement | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Trim size | The finished page size — e.g. 6″ × 9″, 5.5″ × 8.5″, A5 |
| Page count | Determines spine width |
| Spine width | Page count × paper thickness |
Spine width formula (approximate):
- Black & white on white paper: pages × 0.002252″
- Black & white on cream paper: pages × 0.0025″
- Colour (standard) on white paper: pages × 0.002252″
- Colour (premium) on white paper: pages × 0.002347″
So a 200-page black-and-white book on cream paper has a spine of about 0.5 inches. Don’t guess — most print services publish a spine calculator.
Where you’re publishing decides the specs
| Platform | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Amazon KDP | A free cover template calculator (enter trim size + page count) |
| IngramSpark | Downloadable cover template |
| Traditional printer | Usually supplies a template — always ask |
| Ebook only | No spine, no bleed — just the front at 1600 × 2560 px for Kindle |
Use the template. Every serious print service gives you a downloadable file with the exact spine, bleed, and safe zones marked. Designing without it is how covers get rejected.
Step by step (Canva)
- Get the template first. Download your print service’s cover template, or note the full wrap dimensions (back + spine + front + bleed).
- In Canva, Create a design → Custom size, and enter the full wrap dimensions in mm or inches.
- Import the template as an image and drop it on the bottom layer at exactly 100% size.
- Add guides at the fold lines so you know where the spine and both covers begin.
- Design the front cover first — this is what sells the book. Then the spine (title + author, readable when shelved), then the back (blurb, barcode area, author bio).
- Keep text inside the safe zone — at least 5 mm from the trim edge and clear of the spine.
- Export as PDF Print with the bleed included.
Don’t delete the template layer until you’re done. It’s your only reference for where the fold and trim lines fall.
What goes where
Front cover:
- Title (the biggest element — readable at thumbnail size)
- Author name
- One strong image or a clean typographic treatment
Spine:
- Title and author, both readable when the book is on a shelf
- Only 0.25″ of space for a short book — don’t try to fit a blurb
Back cover:
- A blurb (150–200 words max)
- Author bio (short)
- Leave a clear white rectangle for the barcode — usually bottom-right
- ISBN if you have one
Design rules for a cover that works
- It must read at thumbnail size. Amazon shows covers tiny — if the title isn’t legible at 100px tall, redo it.
- Title is the hero. It should be dramatically bigger than everything else.
- One focal image. Covers with three competing visuals look amateurish.
- Contrast matters more than colour choice. Check it in greyscale — if the title vanishes, there isn’t enough contrast.
- Genre signals matter. A thriller cover should look like a thriller. Readers judge in a fraction of a second.
- Fonts: one or two. Three fonts on a cover reads as confused.
Branding applies here the same way it does elsewhere — see how to make a logo if you’re starting a series, and best colour palette generators for picking a scheme.
Common reasons a cover gets rejected
| Problem | Why |
|---|---|
| Wrong spine width | Page count changed after the cover was made |
| Text outside the safe zone | It gets trimmed off in production |
| No bleed | White edges appear on the printed cover |
| Low-resolution image | Below 300 dpi — prints visibly blurry |
| Wrong colour mode | Canva’s PDF Print can export CMYK (choose the CMYK profile on download — paid plans); RGB files are converted by most printers |
| Barcode area occupied | The printer can’t place the ISBN |
Check every one of these before uploading. Print services reject covers automatically for most of them.
FAQ
How do I make a book cover for free?
Use Canva — set a custom size matching your full wrap, import your printer’s template as a guide, design, and export as PDF Print.
How do I work out the spine width?
Multiply the page count by the paper thickness — about 0.0025″ per page for cream paper, 0.002252″ for white. Or use your print service’s spine calculator, which is safer.
What size should a book cover be?
It depends on your trim size and page count. A 6″ × 9″ paperback with 200 pages needs a wrap of roughly 12.75″ × 9.25″ including spine and bleed. Always use the printer’s template.
Should I design the spine and back too?
For print, yes — a printed cover is one wrap file containing back, spine, and front. For an ebook, you only need the front.
Can I use Canva for Amazon KDP covers?
Yes. Set the canvas to KDP’s wrap dimensions, keep text inside the safe zone, and export as PDF Print with bleed. Download KDP’s cover template first so the spine width is exact.
