How to Use Claude AI (Free, Beginner's Guide)
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, and you can use it free in any browser. Go to claude.ai, sign up with an email or Google account, type your request into the message box, and press Enter. You get a conversational assistant that is especially strong at long documents, careful writing, coding help, and analysis — and you can keep refining the answer with follow-up messages in the same chat.
What is Claude?
Claude is a large language model (LLM) built by Anthropic, an AI safety company. Like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, it is a chatbot you talk to in plain English: you ask a question or give an instruction, and it writes back a response.
What makes Claude worth trying:
- Long documents. Claude is designed to handle very large amounts of text in a single conversation, so you can paste or upload long reports, contracts, or transcripts.
- Writing quality. Many people find its prose more natural and less formulaic than other chatbots, especially for editing and rewriting.
- Coding. It reads, explains, writes, and debugs code in most common languages.
- Analysis and reasoning. It can summarise, compare, extract, and reorganise messy information.
What Claude does not do
- It does not generate images. Claude can look at an image you upload and describe or analyse it, but it cannot create, draw, or edit images. For that you need an image generator — see how to generate images with AI.
- It can be confidently wrong. It may invent facts, citations, or numbers. Always verify anything that matters.
- Its knowledge has a cutoff. It does not automatically know events after its training data, though web search helps close that gap.
How to get started
- Open claude.ai in any modern browser.
- Click Sign up and create an account with an email address or your Google account.
- Verify your email if prompted, then land on the chat screen.
- Click the message box at the bottom, type your request, and press Enter (or click the send arrow).
- Read the reply, then send a follow-up in the same box to refine it — for example, “make it shorter” or “give me three versions”.
There is nothing to install for the web version. Free iOS and Android apps are also available if you prefer your phone.
Key features worth knowing
Uploading documents and long context
You can attach files to a message using the paperclip / plus (+) icon next to the message box. Claude reads PDFs, text files, spreadsheets, and images, then answers questions about them. This is the biggest single reason people choose Claude: you can drop in a 50-page document and ask for a summary, a list of action items, or a plain-English explanation without splitting it into pieces.
Web search
Claude can search the web to pull in current information, and this is available on all plans, including the free tier (subject to usage limits). Turn it on from the tools icon in the message box if it is not already active. It is useful for recent news, prices, or anything that changed after the model’s training cutoff.
Artifacts
Artifacts open a side panel next to the chat where Claude builds substantial output you can see and reuse — a formatted document, a table, a diagram, or a block of code. Instead of scrolling through a wall of chat text, you get the finished thing in its own window, and you can ask Claude to edit it in place. It is handy for drafting templates, writing small apps, or iterating on a document.
Projects
Projects let you group related chats and, on paid plans, attach reference files that Claude can draw on across every conversation inside that project. Use one for a work topic, a course, or a long-running writing task so you are not re-explaining the background each time.
Understanding images
Claude can read images you upload — screenshots, photos, charts, handwriting — and answer questions about them. This is image understanding, not image creation. Ask it to describe a chart, extract text from a screenshot, or suggest improvements to a layout; do not ask it to draw something from scratch.
How to prompt Claude well
The quality of the answer tracks the quality of the request. Give Claude three things: a role, the task, and the format you want.
- ❌ Weak: “Help with my resume.”
- ✅ Strong: “Act as a hiring manager for marketing roles. Rewrite these three resume bullets to be more results-focused, using numbers where possible, and keep each under 20 words: [paste bullets]”
Then iterate. Follow-ups like “make it more concise”, “use a warmer tone”, or “show it as a table” are where the real gains come from. For a deeper walkthrough, see how to write a prompt.
Free vs Pro: what you actually get
The free tier is genuinely usable. Claude Pro is a paid subscription that raises the ceilings.
| Free | Pro (paid) | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | claude.ai, iOS, Android | Same, plus priority at peak times |
| Usage | Daily message limits | Roughly 5× more usage |
| Models | Standard model | Access to the newest, most capable models |
| Projects | Limited | Full Projects with project knowledge |
| Web search | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Trying it, light everyday use | Heavy daily use, long documents, coding |
If you only need occasional help, the free plan is enough. Upgrade when you hit message limits or need the most capable model.
Claude vs ChatGPT: which should you use?
They are close for everyday tasks. Pick Claude when you care most about long-document handling and natural writing, or when you want a more conversational tone. Pick ChatGPT when you want the widest ecosystem of integrations and built-in image generation, or Google Gemini if you live inside Google apps. There is no wrong answer — many people keep two open. Privacy: think before you paste
Free AI tiers are not private vaults. Treat anything you type as potentially reviewable and used to improve the service. Concretely:
- Do not paste passwords, API keys, bank details, medical records, or other people’s personal data.
- Redact names, account numbers, and client information before asking for help with a document.
- Check your plan and settings — paid business tiers offer stronger data controls, but the free consumer tier is the loosest.
- No confidentiality applies. A chatbot is not covered by attorney–client or doctor–patient privilege. When in doubt, leave it out.
FAQ
Is Claude AI free?
Yes. The basic version at claude.ai is free with an email or Google signup. A paid tier, Claude Pro, unlocks the newest models, higher usage limits, and fuller Projects.
Can Claude browse the internet?
Yes — web search works on all plans, including the free tier, though heavy use can hit daily limits. Enable it from the tools icon in the message box if it is not already on.
Can Claude generate images?
No. Claude can understand and analyse images you upload, but it cannot create images. Use a dedicated image generator for that.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the task. Claude is often preferred for long documents, careful writing, and coding, while ChatGPT has a broader ecosystem and built-in image generation. They are comparable for most everyday requests.
Do I need to download anything to use Claude?
No. Claude runs in any browser at claude.ai, with optional free iOS and Android apps. Just sign up and start typing.
