How to Curve Text in Canva (Step by Step)

To curve text in Canva, select the text box, open Effects, and choose Curve — then drag the slider to bend it up or down. It’s a built-in effect (free, no Pro upgrade), and it turns straight text into an arc for logos, badges, and circular headings.

Step by step

  1. Add text with Text → Add a heading (or any text box).
  2. Type your words.
  3. With the text box selected, click Effects in the top toolbar.
  4. Choose Curve from the effects list.
  5. Drag the Curve slider left or right — one way arcs the text up, the other arcs it down.
  6. Click away to apply. Reopen Effects any time to adjust.

That’s the whole feature. Everything below is making it look good.

Curve up or curve down?

DirectionSliderBest for
Arc up (convex)Drag one wayText above a circle or badge — “top of the ring”
Arc down (concave)Drag the other wayText below a circle — “bottom of the ring”

To build a full circular badge, you need two separate text boxes: one curved up for the top line, one curved down for the bottom, positioned manually above and below a central shape or logo. Canva curves each text box independently — it won’t wrap text around a circle for you.

Adjusting the curve amount

The slider controls how extreme the bend is.

The practical limit: past roughly the half-way point, letters start to stretch and rotate oddly, especially on longer words. If it looks wrong, shorten the text or reduce the curve rather than pushing harder.

Fixing the spacing problems curved text creates

Curving stretches the gaps between letters unevenly. Three fixes:

ProblemFix
Letters spread apart at the endsReduce the curve amount, or use fewer words
Letter spacing looks looseUse the Spacing control (text toolbar) to tighten it
Letters overlap or squashIncrease spacing, or reduce curve
Text sits off-centreDrag the text box, and use Position → Align to centre it
Curve won’t applyYou may have selected a shape or image instead of a text box

Curved text is still a text box. You can resize it, recolour it, change the font, and move it like any other text — the curve is an effect applied on top.

Should you curve your text?

Curved text is a strong visual move, which makes it easy to overuse.

Use it for: badges, seals, circular logos, sticker designs, event emblems, anything meant to feel official or celebratory.

Avoid it for: body copy, long headings, and anything that needs to stay readable at small sizes. Arced text is slower to read — the eye follows the curve instead of a straight line.

For a wordmark or brand mark, curving one line is often enough — see how to make a logo for the wider process. And if you’re new to the editor, how to use Canva covers the basics first.

Curved text vs. wrapping text

These are different jobs, and Canva handles them differently:

What it doesWhere
CurveBends a whole text box into an arcEffects → Curve
Wrap textFlows a paragraph around a shape or imageNot automatic in Canva — see wrapping text around an image

Curving is a one-click effect. Wrapping a paragraph around a photo has to be done manually with separate text boxes.

On mobile

The Canva app has the same Curve effect:

  1. Select the text box.
  2. Tap Effects (you may need to scroll the bottom toolbar).
  3. Tap Curve and drag the slider.

The slider is fiddlier with a finger, so for precision work it’s worth finishing on desktop.

FAQ

How do I curve text in Canva?

Select the text box → Effects → Curve → drag the slider. It arcs the text up or down depending on which way you drag.

Is curved text free in Canva?

Yes. Curve is a standard Effects option and works on the free plan — no Pro upgrade needed.

How do I make a circular text badge?

Use two text boxes: one curved up for the top arc, one curved down for the bottom, with a shape or logo in the middle. Canva curves each box separately, so you position them to form the ring.

Why does my curved text look stretched?

The curve is too extreme for the length of the text. Reduce the amount, shorten the words, or tighten the letter spacing.

Can I curve text in the Canva app?

Yes — select the text, tap Effects, then Curve. It’s the same feature as on desktop, just with a smaller slider.
