How to Wrap Text Around an Image in Canva

Canva has no automatic text-wrap-around-image feature. Unlike Word or Google Docs, text won’t flow around a picture on its own — you build the effect manually using separate text boxes positioned in the free space. It looks just as good when done deliberately.

Why there’s no automatic version

Word processors wrap text because they’re laying out a continuous flow of paragraphs — the program knows where the text is and can push it around an obstacle.

Canva is a canvas: every text box and image is an independent object you position yourself. Nothing “flows,” so nothing can flow around anything. Once you accept that, the manual method is quick.

The manual method that works

The trick is breaking your paragraph into two text boxes — one beside the image, one below it.

  1. Add your image and place it where you want it (e.g. the right-hand side).
  2. Text → Add a text box and type the part of the paragraph that sits beside the image.
  3. Resize that box so its right edge stops at the image. Line-break the text manually so it fills the column neatly.
  4. Add a second text box below the image for the rest of the paragraph.
  5. Select both text boxes and match their font, size, and colour so they read as one block.
  6. Use Position → Align to line the left edges up.

At normal reading size, a reader sees one paragraph flowing around the photo. They can’t tell it’s two boxes.

Keep the texts visually identical. If the font size or line height differs even slightly, the seam becomes obvious. Set the formatting on the first box, then copy it and paste the style to the second.

The half-page layout (simpler and often better)

If the manual wrap is fiddly, a cleaner alternative:

Both are standard editorial layouts, take seconds to build, and avoid the ragged right edge that manual wrapping often produces. For brochures and posters this is usually the better choice — see how to make a brochure for how it looks in print.

Getting the spacing right

ProblemFix

Ragged right edge looks messyLeft-align both boxes rather than justifying; shorten lines

Text boxes won’t line upSelect both, then Position → Align → Left
Text overlaps the image when resizedCanva objects don’t push each other — reposition manually

A useful habit: turn on File → Settings → Show rulers and guides so you can see where the image edge is and stop the text at exactly the same point on every row.

If you actually need real text wrapping

Canva is the wrong tool for a long document where text must flow around an image. Use a program built for flowing text:

Then export to PDF and bring that page into Canva if you need to style it further. The print-side workflow is covered in how to make a flyer and, if you’re converting a document, how to convert Word to PDF.

FAQ

Does Canva have text wrapping around images?

No. Canva has no automatic wrap. You create the effect manually with two text boxes — one beside the image, one below it — matched in formatting.

How do I make text go around a picture in Canva?

Place the image, add a text box in the space beside it, add a second box below for the rest of the paragraph, then match the font, size, and colour of both so they read as one block.

Is there a Canva app that wraps text automatically?

Not in the standard editor. Google Docs and Microsoft Word both do true wrapping — build the layout there, then import to Canva if you need to style it.

Why does my wrapped text look uneven?

Because two separate boxes rarely align perfectly. Left-align both, match line spacing exactly, and use rulers to keep the right edge consistent.

What’s the easiest way to put an image with text in Canva?

Use a two-column layout — image on one side, text on the other — or image above text. It’s faster than manual wrapping and looks cleaner at print sizes.
